Spark Program
SPARK is a student-centered program. Its goal is to help adolescents -- whether it is learning how to cope with feelings of pain, guilt or isolation, developing self-awareness, or a sense of belonging. SPARK empowers students through positive role models and constructive values. It is a place where students can really be themselves without fear of being criticized or judged by others. Some students join SPARK to be in a peer group; others want someone they can talk to openly about all kinds of issues; and some join to meet new friends and to get involved in school activities.

Prudence Rogers, the new SPARK Counselor at Goldstein, is working to combine the roles of intervention, prevention and peer facilitation in order to give the school a more comprehensive program. A Peer Helping group meets as a class four times a week and follows a course curriculum dealing with issues such as values, trust, attitudes and behaviors, feelings and active listening. Additionally, students participate in a wide array of school-wide and community service activities. Projected plans include information tables in the student cafeteria, cultural diversity appreciation activities, articulation with a local junior high school, "Prom Promise" pledge sign-up, as well as volunteer efforts at nursing homes, animal shelters and soup kitchens.

In addition to the peer helping program, SPARK offers students the opportunity to participate in lunchtime discussion and developmental groups where young people are free to talk about relevant topics such as alcohol and drug prevention, stress, relationships, parental issues and dating.

SPARK also provides individual counseling to referred students or to those who request it.

The SPARK Office is located in Room 207A and Ms. Rogers can be reached at 718-368-8500, ext. 8563.
