Fine Arts
The LMGHS Art Department offers outstanding art education instruction to students in subjects such as Ceramic Pottery & Sculpture, Film Production, and Painting & Drawing. Our students have received recognition for the artwork they have made in our classes through participation and awards in both New York City and national student art exhibitions and competitions, including the Scholastic Art Awards exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Arts Connection exhibitions in Manhattan, student exhibits in the gallery of the Museum of Modern Art's Education Department, and PS Art exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A large annual exhibition of LMG student artwork is displayed in the 1600 square foot Art Gallery of Kingsborough Community College for 3 weeks every January. The gallery exhibition opening incorporates talks by participating art and music students as well as performances of the students in the Jazz Ensemble and the Chamber Chorus. This is one of the cultural highlights of the school year.
Students can take free college Art classes for 3 college credits at KCC through the Bridge Program as part of the collaboration LMGHS has with the KCC/CUNY Art Department. Students who have completed a minimum of nine high school semesters (9 high school credits) of arts study, along with a rigorous assessment of their art form, including passing the NY State Visual Arts Regents Examination, have and will also earn the NYC Chancellor’s Arts Endorsed Diploma.
The school has a small, but significant art collection including the painting, "Freedom of Artistic Expression" by Frank Herbert Mason (displayed in the school library), the sculpture, "Genius" by Ralph Helmick (displayed in the main lobby), as well as paintings, pottery, sculptures and photography by former students.
Our students have been selected for internships at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the International Center of Photography. They have also received scholarships for study in pre-college art programs at Parsons, NYU, ICP, and FIT. LMGHS graduates have been accepted and attend art programs at SUNY-Purchase, SUNY-FIT, Pratt Institute, Philadelphia University Architecture School, City College-CUNY Architecture School, School of Visual Arts, and Bard College, etc.
